Can you respond to a Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx activation?

At FNM yesterday, I tried to activate nykthos with 2 Burning-Tree Emissary s on the field with a Sylvan Caryatid .He tried to use Bile Blight on my Burning-Trees and tried to take my devotion away in response to my Nykthos activation. I remembered reading or hearing somewhere that mana abilities can't be responded to and I presume that Nykthos is a mana ability. I asked our Tournament guy who acts as our judge, and he said that he can respond but I would still get the devotion from the Burning-Trees, so I guess it really didn't matter but can a person respond to a Nykthos activation to try and take your devotion away?

Your judge and opponent were wrong. Mana abilities don't use the stack, and players can't respond to them. Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx 's abilities resolve immediately upon activation.
