Can you fetch a shock land with Farseek?

Asked by Xzallion 12 years ago

I was having this argument with a friend and was saying you couldn't but he insists you can. After trying to look it up on the Oracle and the Return to Ravnica FAQ I can not find any conclusive evidence either way. Can someone please help me and show me where I can find the answer to something like this in the future?

Farseek says to search for a Plains, Island, Swamp, or Mountain card. It doesn't say search for a basic Plains, Island, Swamp, or Mountain card, so you can find any land card that has one of those types. Shock lands have both appropriate basic land types, so you can find shocks with Farseek .

Yes, you can. Farseek allows you to search for a Plains, Island, Swamp or Mountain, but it doesn't mean the specific card name, it means the card type. For instance, Watery Grave says Land - Island Swamp, so you can search for it as either a Swamp or an Island card.

Usually this sort of information can be obtained from the Gatherer entry, it seems interesting that it isn't there.

Because Farseek doesn't say "a card named", and doesn't specify "basic land", it means any land with at least one of those types. For example, Sacred Foundry is a Mountain card, so it's a legal choice for Farseek. Farseek is able to fetch up all of the shock lands (which is why it was printed in original Ravnica block in the first place).
