Can you decide which mode happens first on Infernal Offering?

Asked by Dredge4life 9 years ago

I was playing a friend and he wanted to kill my Kothophed and didn't want me to get it back, so he tried using Infernal Offering on it. Do the modes happen simultaniously or can I get it back with the return effect after saccing it?

Also meant to say, can he decide which mode goes first?

Please remember to link all cards. [ [ Infernal Offering ] ] , minus the spaces, makes Infernal Offering.

As a spell or ability is resolving, its instructions are always carried out in the order they are listed on the card (except in a few weird cases where a later part of the card specifically modifies an earlier part, such as on Savage Punch). Infernal Offering's "sacrifice and draw" effect always happens before its reanimate effect.

And since Infernal Offering doesn't target the creatures it reanimates (doesn't target anything actually...), you are allowed to return the same creature you sacrificed for the first part of the spells effect. The lack of targets is important here.

Also note that if this were a multiplayer game, your opponent doesn't have to choose the same player for both parts of the spell. They could choose you for the first effect and make you sac a creature, then choose a different player and let them reanimate a creature. That way you wouldn't get your Kothophed back.

And lastly, Infernal Offering doesn't have modes. It just has two separate effects. A card with modes is something like Cryptic Command, where you choose what effects it will have before putting it on the stack. That's also important sometimes.
