Can you Counterspell split second?

Asked by glueball 14 years ago

I was playing a match and [sudden spoiling] was countered by [counterspell]. I have looked at different websites and do not know if you can do this.

No. Split Second means that when the card with split second is on the stack, players can't cast spells or use abilities. Counterspell is a spell, so it can't be played while Sudden Spoiling is on the stack.

Fun fact though, while you cannot play spells or activate abilities while Sudden Spoiling is on the stack, you can resolve triggered abilities.

So, if the spoiling was cast into a Counterbalance and a card with a CMC of 3 shows up, the spoiling is countered.

yeah, because blind Counterbalance into a counter isn't going to make your opponent flip the table over into your face :P

That's not true, counterbalance's triggered ability will trigger and be placed on the stack but because split second says nothing can be placed on the stack while split second is on the stack, it will then move the triggered ability to the appropriate zone. Rule 603.3
