Can you cast silence in response to something?
Asked by AJtheConquerer 11 years ago
Say my opponent plays a creature, and in response i play silence. Does this effectively counter the spell? or since i cast that after he did would it resolve?

Please link all cards in your question.
Silence
Silence 's reminder text explicitly states: "Spells cast before this resolves are unaffected." You can certainly cast Silence in response to something, but Silence won't affect anything put onto the stack before Silence itself resolves.

What is it about this card that people always ask this question? I'm not trying to be a dick to you, so please don't take it that way. I'm literally just bewildered. because the card says directly on it "spells cast before this resolves are unaffected." Yet I've seen this exact question asked on here a few different times. Now I know some people use this forum a lot and, at times, are more likely to come here and ask a question than look something up on Gatherer, but the answer to this question doesn't even require you to look it up anywhere because it's directly printed on the card. How do so many people miss that??

Like I said, it was nothing against you specifically. It just kind of amazes me when I see this question asked as much as I have, and the direct answer to it is printed on the card.
my response was more an expression of my bewilderment, and not an effort to belittle you.

yeah, i get it. i never actually have owned the card, but i was going to borrow them from a friend tonight. i knew what the card did, just not how it exactly did it.

If you aren't familiar with the process of casting spells and/or how the stack works, it's a confusing card. I think (even with the handy reminder text) it's tough to wrap your head around until you've gained some deeper rules knowledge.

i know a lot of the rules, its just i wasn't sure how that particular one worked. the casting of my opponents card was the point of the question, though. thanks for the input guys.

No problem. We're here to answer these questions.
I usually just assume I'm answering these questions for a lay audience with minimal game familiarity unless the wording/content of the question demonstrates otherwise. I'd absolutely prefer people go to the Gatherer page first, but not everyone does.

As a side note Render Silent does Silence +Cancel for 3 mana, if you're still looking to make it work as you asked originally.

yes, i know that. im also running that in my deck:
i just wasn't sure how silence worked. my friend just told me what the card did, and i didn't see the reminder text until a minute ago.
