Can Tibalt be in Brawl and Oathbreaker?

Asked by Eldrazi13 3 years ago

I was hoping to make Brawl deck using Valki, God of Lies  Flip as the "Commander" but what I wanted to know was, since it would count as Rakdos with Tibalt, could I use it as an Oathbreaker using Tibalt when it rotates out?

Sorry if the phrasing is confusing. I'm still getting used to Double-Faced Gods in Kaldheim

Valki//Tibalt is a valid Brawl commander, and since color identity checks both sides of the cards he will be a red/black commander. However, Valki is not a planeswalker on the front so he is not a valid Oathbreaker commander.

Remember, though, Oathbreaker is a casual format so it really depends on if your playgroup is okay with it.

Thanks, Polaris. I was a little confused because I thought you could choose which side you played for Valki/Tibalt, so I thought I could just choose Tibalt and use Oathbreaker.

The rules for modal double faced cards (MDFCs) are that when you cast the card you can choose which side to cast it on, but if it's in your hand, deck, graveyard, etc it's treated as the front face (so Valki//Tibalt can't be searched for by Call the Gatewatch , for example).

Again, though, Oathbreaker being a casual format you might be able to get your group to let you run Tibalt just on the back side, or who knows, maybe even both?
