Can I still use colored mana to summon colorless creatures?
Asked by Cybersix 9 years ago
Not sure I understand the new rules....old rules, I tap Gilded Lotus for an illegal color in my colorless deck, like, say Plains, and I get generic mana, which I then use.
I was told I cannot generate colourless mana with Gilded Lotus anymore. So can I still use my colored mana I'm generating with Gilded Lotus to summon, say, Ullamog the Infinite Gyre or whatever?
This belongs in the Rules Q&A forum.
You can still use Gilded Lotus to pay for Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre because he is generic mana, which is now different from colorless mana. Gilded Lotus will not be able to tap for specifically colorless mana to play something like Kozilek, the Great Distortion.

OK, thanks Vault. I put it in this section because it was Commander rules specific.

There are two things here, one of which they might not have actually asked?
Generic mana has and will always be something you can pay for with any kind of mana, whether coloured or not. Cards like Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre didn't change at all with the change to symbol for colourless. All costs for all things outside OGW have been and stay generic and don't turn to colourless. You could use Gilded Lotus for them before and still can, without needing to do the thing where you tap it for a wrong colour to make it colourless. Nothing has had a colourless -cost- before OGW.
The other thing is the Commander rule that if mana of any colour outside your commander's identity would be added to your mana pool, it would add colourless mana instead, so in fact, if you used a Gilded Lotus in a mono-blue commander deck to add red mana to your mana pool, it would turn to colourless and you could use it to cast Kozilek, the Great Distortion.
BUT
The Rules Committee recently removed that clause from Commander rules, and you can now freely add mana of colours outside your identity to your mana pool, though that is only ever useful if you've stolen a card from another person with abilities that need that mana. So since you can't tap Gilded Lotus for colourless (as that's not a colour) AND you no longer get it -turned- to colourless by Commander rules, NOW Lotus can't do it, though it could before.

Since when couldn't you? Generic mana can be paid for with any color mana. A mana cost of (4) is just a generic mana cost, it doesn't mean you must pay colorless mana into it. You may pay that 4 with any mana you choose.
