Can I sac the land I tapped to play Shard Volley?

Asked by Deoplo 6 years ago

I don't know if additional costs, specifically in the case of Shard Volley, are paid after mana cost. So could I tap a mountain for Shard Volley, and then sac that same mountain?

I believe it works that way. Because you use the red mana from your mana pool and sac a land. When you tap the mountain, it only adds the mana, doesn't actually cast the card yet.

I think.

Absolutely. If you tap a Mountain for one , you then pay that and sacrifice the tapped mountain to cast Shard Volley.

The only exception to this would be if the card specifically stated that you have to sacrifice an untapped land, such as in the case of Soldevi Excavations or Balduvian Trading Post.

You have two options, float the mana by tapping the mana, then declaring you're casting Shard Volley and after all the behind the scenes nonsense of casting a spell, you eventually sacrifice the Mountain and pay the . You can also simply declare that you are casting Shard Volley and in the middle of the behind the scenes nonsense you get a chance to activate mana abilities and can tap the Mountain then the very next thing that happens is you have to pay the and sacrifice the Mountain. You can pay those costs in either order, but it doesn't really matter because you have to produce the mana in the step before paying either cost anyways.
