Could I play card:boros Garden on the first turn even though i dont have a plains or mountain on the field?

First off, it's Boros Garrison.

And no, you cannot. A requirement for the card to be placed is to return a land to your hand. Without a land to be returned, it cannot be played.

You can play it, it's just that you'll have to return it to your hand.

Well yes. In essence, though, you technically wouldn't be gaining anything from it.

That's not entirely true. Say you have a creature with landfall, like Steppe Lynx but all of your lands get destroyed. You're still having a land enter the battlefield.

When you have Steppe Lynx out, yes.

In context though, the question is asking about a turn one play. In that situation, Boros Garrison is rendered useless.

No, I agree with that. I'm just pointing out that not all situations in which you would play it and then have to bounce it are useless.

... I suppose Steppe Lynx could be in play, if your opponent went first and managed a first turn Show and Tell ...

But if you had Boros Garrison as your only land, and nothing better than a Steppe Lynx in your first hand, I'd be wondering why you didn't mulligan.

The accepted answer isn't accurate. Yes, you're allowed to play Boros Garrison as your first land, but you probably won't like the result. Since it's your only land, you'll have to return it to your hand when its triggered ability resolves.
