Can I get double the counters with a double striking Archangel of Thune?

Asked by CJ_95 11 years ago

Say for example, I just have 1 Archangel of Thune on the field soulbonded with Silverblade Paladin . I attack with her and I hit my opponent. Would the scenario be: I hit them for 3, gain 3 life and get a +1/+1 counter on my creatures, then she hits for 4 the second time, gaining 4 more life and another +1/+1 counter; all in one attack? With all that, gaining 7 life and getting 2 +1/+1 counters on my creatures. Basically, do the counters attach immediately in the middle of attacks and count?

You do get the counters before the second combat damage step

You do do 7 damage and gain 7 life

This is the reason why Markov Blademaster is really cool. 1/1 double strike. Okay, it's a Fencing Ace . Swing, it's a Wrecking Ogre . Swing again, it's now a really powerful 3-drop.

If creatures with first strike or double strike are involved in battle, an additional damage step is added before the normal damage step. Only creatures with first strike or double strike deal damage in that step.

In both of these steps, the order is

  • turn-based events (aka the damage being dealt).
  • Triggered abilities go on the stack
  • the active player receives priority (the right to activate abilities or cast spells)

The game proceeds to the next step when the >>stack is empty<< and both players pass priority in succession.

Long story short: Whatever triggers in the first strike damage step, resolves before the second, normal damage step.
