Can I counter multicolor spells with Gainsay if they include blue in converted mana cost?

Asked by HamppuHannu 11 years ago

I couldn't find any good information about this and I consider myself quite new Mtg player. So.. Can I counter multicolor spells with Gainsay if they include blue in converted mana cost? Im considering these in cards into my sideboard and the answer for this question affects to my decision about this card.

Thank you for answers and help already!

Yes because multicolor spells are actually counted as blue spells and black spells and white spell or whatever.

"Converted mana cost" is just a number; it itself doesn't tell you what color the spell is. It's simply the total mana cost of the spell. Centaur Healer 's CMC is 3 for example; not "white and green".

Gainsay (and spells like it, ex: Dark Betrayal ) only care if the object is a certain color. If it has other colors, it's purely incidental and doesn't matter. Kind of like how Shatter can kill an Artifact Creature like Street Sweeper . The fact that it's also a creature doesn't matter to Shatter ; the Sweeper is still destroyed.
