Can I counter a creature being played by Elvish Piper with Counterspell?

It think that I can't counter it, but m not completely clear.This happen in game between my friend and I, We argued for about 30 mins. over this.

Elvish Piper
Elvish Piper's ability puts a card directly onto the battlefield from your hand. The card is never cast, and it never goes to the stack. An effect will always specify, using the word "cast" whether it causes you to cast anything.

I believe that as it isn't actually "cast", only put into play, that it can't be countered with Counterspell. However, something like Stifle could counter the elf's ability.
