Can I copy a creature with Sculpting Steel that's been petrified?

Asked by Aethaleon 9 years ago

I have Xathrid Gorgon on the field and use her effect to petrify my opponents Avacyn, Angel of Hope. Can I then make a copy of Avacyn with Sculpting Steel? If so, would that copy be un-petrified since it would enter the battlefield without a petrification counter on it? Also, if this copy is valid, would it be treated as an artifact or as a white legendary angel?

Yes, it would be un-petrified. But, you cannot copy a non-artifact creature. So you can't copy Avacyn, Angel of Hope. But you could copy artifact creatures like Adaptive Automaton.

@HostOfSmallPox: Xathrid Gorgon's ability turns the creature into a colorless artifact in addition to its other types.

Remember that when you copy a permanent, you copy its base characteristics (what's written on the card or token itself). You also include text-changing effects (the Sleight of Mind kind) and other copy effects.

When you copy a petrified Avacyn, Angel of Hope, you'll get a regular Avacyn. It won't be an artifact, it won't have defender, and it won't be petrified.
