Can I choose to copy Clone by Progenitor Mimic to get infinite cloning?

Asked by Deadz0512 9 years ago

I was just curious if you could copy Clone s with Progenitor Mimic because think of this scenario:

Let's say you have Paragon of Gathering Mists on the field. You cast Clone , but decide not to use its ability, so it's a 1/1 Shapeshifter now (is it correct?).

Then you put cast Progenitor Mimic and make a copy of the Clone on the field under your control. Then if it would enter the field, it would make a copy of Clone , activating the ability to copy another creature. The next turn, progenitor makes another clone, copying another different creature. That would give you the ability to copy different creatures each turn.

Does that work? I'm not really sure about cloning mechanics. I just encountered them recently.

If you choose not to use the Clone s ability, it will enter as a 0/0 due to it's base P/T and just die immediately. You must copy a creature for it to have any use.

Progenitor Mimic , similarly, couldn't fail to use it's ability because it would be a 0/0. You must copy another creature you control, and thus can only create copies of that creature with Progenitor Mimic .

@thispersonisagenius Wait, so does that mean that Clone dies before getting a +1/+1 from Paragon of Gathering Mists ? If so, I've been playing magic wrong for a while.

Ah, my mistake. I didn't notice the Paragon of Gathering Mists in your post.

In that case, you are correct in your reasoning.

thispersonisagenius is correct, broadly, but he's forgetting about your Anthem effect..

If you have an Anthem effect of some sort giving all your creatures (or all your blue creature) +1/+1 then you could choose not to use Clone 's ability and it would survive (Paragon of Gathering Mists would indeed do the trick, yes.).

When Progenitor Mimic copies the Clone it would also become a 0/0 Blue clone with a +1/+1 static bonus.

Each turn, as the Clone token enters the battlefield, you could choose any creature to copy.

Oh I see. So it would work? Thanks for answering, then. It's been stuck on my mind for a while as I'm planning to make a deck out of this. Thanks again.

It's a lot of steps, and a lot of pieces (and would probably be easier just to get a good creature out and have the Mimic copy it directly) but I don't see why it wouldn't work.

Note that nothing activates in this scenario. Only activated abilities are activated. Clone has neither an activated nor a triggered ability; rather, it has a replacement effect that modifies how it enters the battlefield.
