Can a clone ability work on a land that has been turned into a creature?

Asked by Longardia 9 years ago

For example, If I use Liege of the Tangle's ability to transform any number of my lands into creatures, will I be able to cast Mirrorweave or Infinite Reflection on them and change them into something else. I probably wouldn't change something that powerful anyway but I would like to know if this is possible.

BTW I am aware that casting Infinite Reflection on the elemental lands would not change them. I would cast Infinite Reflection on something else wanting the elemental lands to change.

This ends up being more complicated than it looks.

To determine an object's characteristics, you use a series of Layers. The order goes:

  • Copy Effects
  • Control-Changing Effects
  • Text-Changing Effects
  • Type-Changing Effects
  • Color-Changing Effects
  • Ability-Adding/Removing Effects
  • P/T-Changing Effects (this layer has a series of sublayers)

Let's say you want to Mirrorweave/Infinite Reflection all your animated lands into Krenko's Enforcers. The copy effect makes them Enforcers in Layer 1, but then the type, color, and P/T-changing effects created by Liege of the Tangle end up being applied on top of that. Each of the resulting creatures will be a Green 8/8 Creature - Elemental with Intimidate named Krenko's Enforcer (they aren't lands).

Let's say you want to target one of your animated lands with one of those copy effects and turn everything else into a copy. Because copy effects only copy the printed characteristics of a card, any creature that isn't already a land with an Awakening counter will become a non-creature land.

Rhadamanthus So what if I decided to Mirrorweave a Biovisionary. These "lands" still count towards the 4 creatures I need to win the game correct.

Another question, If I use Mirrorweave on Biovisionary and my opponent has four creatures, would the match end in a stalemate?

The lands will be copies of Biovisionary, so they'll count.

For the "who wins" question, it depends on whose turn it is. The abilities will all trigger, and they'll be put onto the stack in APNAP order. The player whose turn it is will lose.

I had to look up what you meant by APNAP rule. I will refer back to that the next time I have a similar question. That's pretty inconvenient for me. I suppose I will just need to limit my opponents field if I plan to attempt that route of victory. Thanks! Your answers were a big help

Apologies for not being clearer.

The good news is that you can still do this on your opponent's turn and win the game. If it's your opponent's turn, he'll/she'll be the active player, so he'll/she'll put his/her abilities on the stack first. Then, your abilities will go above them. Because yours resolve first, you'll win the game.

Also, please remember to select the best answer to your original question in order to close this thread.
