Basilisk collar and plague spitter death damage

Asked by lorenweng 12 years ago

So if I have a Plague Spitter out on the field equipped with a Basilisk Collar or any equipment that gives it deathtouch and he gets murdered. Does his "put into graveyard" damage still have the property of deathtouch or is the collar unequipped by then?

By the time the Plague Spitter 's "put into graveyard" ability triggers, the equipment will have fallen off and the Spitter will no longer have deathtouch.

Hold on, I think it actually does.

This has to do with last-known information and objects changing zones, and every time I feel confident I understand it, I twist myself up somewhere explaining it, so rather than possibly spreading bad info I'm going to see if Epochalyptik or Rhadamanthus are around to explain the answer.

Plague Spitter 's ability will use Plague Spitter 's last known information to determine the nature of the damage it deals. Because Plague Spitter died while it was equipped with Basilisk Collar , its LKI shows that it had deathtouch. Therefore, the ability will deal deathtouch damage.

702.2e If an object changes zones before an effect causes it to deal damage, its last known information is used to determine whether it had deathtouch.

When the Plague Spitter 's ability triggers, it checks its last existence on the battlefield. Since it was equipped with Basilisk Collar , it had deathtouch. So therefore, the damage dealt by the spitter's death trigger will be deathtouch damage.

Ah, good to know. I stand corrected.

There we go. In addition, 112.7 explains LKI pretty clearly. That and 702.2e are what I'd cite, now that I've actually looked it up.

Also, "dies" triggers are a special type of "leaves the battlefield" trigger. "Leaves the battlefield" triggers trigger from the battlefield, and always use LKI from the battlefield.

Thanks for that clarification, Rhadamanthus. I think that's the part where I tripped up.
