Asceticism and rulings on sudden spoiling

Asked by Mairon_Bauglir 8 years ago

I'm having an issue with these two cards and how they work out. Asceticism is an enchantment that affects all of my creatures that can't be the target of spells or abilities of opponent player. However Sudden Spoiling targets player and removes all abilities of that player's creatures and reduce them to 0/2. Now from what I understand, sudden spoiling would hit the player, if it was something like Archetype of Endurance then it would be affected by sudden spoiling, but because Asceticism isn't a creature, it wouldn't be affected and thusly Sudden Spoiling wouldn't affect the creatures under my control. I would very much like it if someone could clarify this for me and verify whether or not this is correct.

I don't see what is so confusing, Sudden Spoiling targets the player, Asceticism targets effects your creatures so if I cast spoiling on you your creatures will be 0/2 because it never targets your creatures.

Something that was failed to be mentioned was that the Oracle text for Asceticism has been updated to say "creatures you control have hexproof."

When you resolve Sudden Spoiling, the opponent's creatures will become 0/2 and Lose Hexproof until end of turn.

This is because of layering/time stamps. Because Asceticism was in play before Sudden Spoiling resolved, the creatures will lose Hexproof. If it was the other way around, the creatures would gain hexproof after losing all abilities and becoming 0/2.

Also, SS targets the player not the creatures.

And to complement what Raging_Squiggle has said: This is one of the rare corner cases where changing an effect to a keyword ability (as the Errata for Asceticism has) actually has an impact, as it changes the Enchantment providing the "protection" for the creatures to the enchantment giving an ability to the creatures. You (Mairon_Bauglir) are correct to say that before this change, there would be a difference between Asceticism and Archetype of Endurance, which is that Asceticism would still provide the "protection" to your creatures, and the Archetype would not. Now that it's a keyword ability actually given to the creatures, that keyword ability is overwritten (on timestamp basis) by Sudden Spoiling, as Raging_Squiggle said.
