Arrest a Geist
Asked by scholar 13 years ago
Is it possible for an opponent to cast Arrest on my Geist of Saint Traft ? Thanks in advance!
But Arrest doesn't target per se. It reads: "Enchant creature", rather than "Enchant target creature".

you're still targeting a creature though, right?
so therefore you can't target a creature with hexproof.
what are you enchanting then, the space that Geist of Saint Traft is occupying?
in fact, all aura enchantments state "enchant creature"

As per the rules, all auras target a specific object while they are spells on the stack. They are the only permanent spells with targets.
114.1b Aura spells are always targeted. These are the only permanent spells with targets. An Aura's target is specified by its enchant keyword ability (see rule 702.5, "Enchant"). The target(s) are chosen as the spell is cast; see rule 601.2c. An Aura permanent doesn't target anything; only the spell is targeted. (An activated or triggered ability of an Aura permanent can also be targeted.)
Since Geist of Saint Traft has hexproof, it can't be targeted by Arrest when Arrest is cast. However, if Arrest enters the battlefield through any means other than being cast (Open the Vaults , for example), it becomes attached to an object of the appropriate type without targeting.

Also,
303.4a An Aura spell requires a target, which is restricted by its enchant ability.

You MAY Arrest a Geist of Saint Traft under your OWN control, as per it being hexproof and not shroud, though I'm not sure why you'd want to.

strictly folowing your queston no
your creature is not a legal target
however if there was an effect that put the enchantment into play he could chouse to put it on the creature as the enchantment only targets when you play it with its mana cost from your hand

An Aura enchantment targets any time it is cast from anywhere by paying any (or sometimes by paying no) cost. Auras target while on the stack, are the only permanent spells with targets, and do not target as permanents.

No, it isn't. The Geist has Hexproof, which means it can't be the ability of spells or abilities your opponents control. Auras are spells while they're on the stack, and they have to target in order to cast them, so your opponent cannot cast one on your Geist.
