Armadillo Cloak + Unflinching Courage Lifegain
Asked by Kinekt4 11 years ago
So I was testing the other day with an enchantments deck, put out a Unflinching Courage on a creature that was already enchanted with an Armadillo Cloak. (It becam an 8/10.) Would I gain 8 life when I dealt damage with it, or 16, because technically Armadillo Cloak doesn't give it the lifelink ability?
I guess to be completely accurate I should say "16 life per damage event", since swinging a double-strike 8/10 can potentially give you 32 life.

I would just like to point out that, while Lifelink doesn't use the stack and simply causes you to also gain life while assigning damage, Armadillo Cloak is a triggered ability. That means that, for example, if you blocked with your creature with an Armadillo Cloak, but you take lethal damage from other creatures, you'll lose the game before you gain the life. It can also be countered, with Trickbind for example.

I know this is very old, but I just wanted to add that the Cloak also stacks. If you have 2 Armadillo Cloak's on a creature, that create has +4/+4 and you gain 2 times the damage it does in life. If you have 2 Unflinching Courage's on a creature, it just has lifelink as it would when you had one of them on it. When you put Armadillo Cloak on a creature with lifelink, the lifegain also stacks (so you can combine Armadillo Cloak and Unflinching Courage). Add that to the fact that you can put the Cloak on an enemy's creature and its just a far better card.

Ouch, I thought I was posting this on another thread. In this thread it was obvious that it stacked. It should have been here: http://tappedout.net/mtg-questions/armadillo-cloak-and-unflinching-courage/#c2415237

You are correct. An 8 power creature would give you 16 life per swing.
8 of that would happen at the same moment as damage is done (from the lifelink ability granted by Unflinching Courage ), and 8 of it would be from a triggered ability that goes on the stack when that damage is done (the not-lifelink ability from Armadillo Cloak ).
In fact, while the rules specifically state that multiple instances of lifelink do not stack, lifegain from multiple Armadillo Cloak s do stack because it's not lifelink.
