Are lands colorless?

Asked by my_gizmo 12 years ago

I was playing a casual game when my opponent played a Vampire Nocturnus . He flipped over the top card of his library and it was a swamp. During combat I was taking the buffs into account when he told me that his creatures didn't have the buff since "lands are colorless". It sounded kinda off and I asked if he'd checked that with a judge before and he said that he had and that lands are, in fact, colorless. I didn't want to argue over that so we just played out the game.

But are basic lands really colorless? I don't think they are since they produce mana of a certain color. I just want to clear this up. Thanks.

Lands are colorless, but do possess color identity (which is usually only relevant during EDH deckbuilding).

So swamps revealed through Vampire Nocturnus won't give your dudes their buff.

Cards color is based on mana cost, unless the rules text specifies instead (Such as Ghostfire ). So since lands have 0 cmc, they don't have a color. However, as aavb132 pointed out, basic lands have the ability T: Add one (color) mana to your mana pool, even if it's not written on the lands anymore. So since they have a mana symbol on them (in the tap ability) they have that color identity.

what if someone is playing a Grindstone ? and I am playing mono-red? Does that instantly mill me out?

No. Since the lands are colorless they don't share a color with the red spells in your deck.
