Arcum Dagsson, master transmuter and any artifact creature

Asked by Bellock86 11 years ago

I'm almost positive this works but I can't find the ruling for it. The set up is as follows:

I have an untapped Arcum Dagsson and Master Transmuter in play and an artifact creature. Let's say it's Memnite .

I tap Arcum Dagsson targeting Memnite and then in response to that activation, activate Master Transmuter bouncing Memnite back to my hand.

Abilities now start resolving. I put Memnite back into play from Master Transmuter .

Here's where I got lost. Would the ability of Arcum Dagsson still resolve and allow me to go get a non creature artifact?

If you happen to have the rules that would be great to as I couldn't find it.

No. Whenever a card changes zones, it becomes a new game object with no relation to, or memory of, its previous iterations in any zones. The Memnite that you put onto the battlefield during the resolution of Master Transmuter 's ability is not the same Memnite you targeted with Arcum Dagsson 's ability. Arcum Dagsson 's ability will fizzle because it no longer has any legal targets. You won't sacrifice anything, and you won't search for anything.

Crap. So even though the sacrificing thing isn't part of the cost of Arcum Dagson the artifact HAS to be sacrificed to get the result of searching for a non creature artifact @ Epochalyptik?

Yes. The way Arcum Dagsson 's ability is written, tapping Arcum Dagsson is the only cost. The sacrifice happens as part of the effect because the ability can target any player's creatures (remember that you can only sacrifice creatures you control, and you can't force another player to perform an action as part of a cost payment).

Because Arcum Dagsson 's ability targets the creature in question, the ability will fizzle if that creature becomes an illegal target.
