Archangel of Thune + Soul's Attendant
Asked by WBG 6 years ago
If I have Soul's Attendant out, and I play Archangel of Thune, do I gain the life AND get counters or just gain the life?

Basically soul's attendant can't trigger unless the angel has already hit the battlefield so when the ability resolves the angel should be around to trigger. If for some reason the attendant dies before the angel resolves there would be no life trigger and no counters also if the angel dies before the life trigger resolves there will be no counters.

You cast Archangel of Thune, and control a 1/1 Soul's Attendant.
When Archangel of Thune resolves, it enters the battlefield. It is on the battlefield when Attendant triggers.
Now the stack looks like this:
- Lifegain Trigger.
The trigger resolves, and you gain 1 life.
Now the Archangel triggers, and the stack looks like this:
- +1/+1 counter trigger
The trigger resolves, and now you have a 2/2 Soul's Attendant and a 4/5 Archangel of Thune.
In short, you will gain life and get the +1/+1 counters

Both. Archangel of Thune entering the battlefield triggers Soul's Attendant's ability, which in turn will trigger Archangel of Thune's ability. If Soul's Attendant's ability was triggered on cast rather than on entering the battlefield you would just gain the life, because Archangel of Thune would not be on the battlefield to trigger, but as written it will.
