altered artwork rules?

Can i use MTG altered artwork cards in FNM or tourney play? or is this something strictly for collecting and casual play?

You may use them, as long as you cannot recognize them when they are in your deck. Use some good sleeves and you should be fine.

The best thing to do is to go up to a judge before the event and ask him if the particular altered card is okay to use.

There are a few rules regarding alters.

First, the head judge (or, if there is no head judge, the tournament organizer) is the final authority on whether an altered card is legal for play. Always check with the head judge prior to the event start, and always bring unaltered copies of your cards in case your alters aren't approved for use.

Alterations cannot change one card to another card (e.g. you can't alter a Counterspell to be a Mana Drain ). Alterations may only be done on real Magic cards. Proxies may only be used if issued by the head judge to replace cards damaged during the course of the event.

Alterations cannot provide any strategic information, hints, or tips. They must also be indistinguishable from other cards in your deck (they must be the same thickness and give no indication that they are alters besides changes made to the face.

As a general guideline, alterations should also be in good taste. The HJ is far less likely to approve your hentai-altered basic lands than your Iron Giant Darksteel Colossus .

I read an article the other day that discussed this topic, and the general consensus I got was:Don't paint over the card's bordersMake sure the alteration makes the card's original art still distinguishableDon't cover up any important info on the card (ie Mana Cost, P/T, etc)

the ones i have been looking at are just border removed to add or complete the look of artwork to the original card.

You can do border painting, so long as you're playing with sleeves (sleeves are required at higher RELs anyway). The main reason to skip border painting is that it makes the cards distinguishable while playing without sleeves.
