A technical question
Asked by FLESHER7 9 years ago
So I am brainstorming a deck and thought about a combo that requires someone of higher knowledge than me to answer. Picture Geist of Saint Traft attacks along with Thalia, Guardian of Thraben. Thalia goes unblocked. Then, Sakashima's Student uses Ninjitsu on Thalia and copies Geist of Saint Traft. Does the second angel trigger when new Geist is attacking?(The first one is blocked & dies so no legendary problems.)
I believe that the angel shouldn't come out because the attack was declared as Thalia. But definitely looking for certified answer.
This should probably be in the Rules Q&A.
And do you mean Invocation of Saint Traft?

@GearNoir no, he meant Geist of Saint Traft, the original. it was pretty clear.

Just for a bit more clarification:
Geist of Saint Traft's ability triggers when the creature attacks. This is an event in the comabt phase where you actually declare attackers. Other than at this point, you cannot cause "when X attacks" abilities to trigger.
Ninjutsu puts the creature into play tapped and attacking. This means that there is never a trigger of "when X attacks".
Also, Ninjutsu replaces an unblocked, attacking creature. This means that if you ninjustu in Sakashima's Student as a copy of Geist of Saint Traft, then the legend rule absolutely will come into effect, forcing you to place one of them into the graveyard. In this scenario, you playing Sakashima's Student must occur BEFORE the deal combat damage step. This is because Sakashima's Student must copy a creature on the battlefield. If Geist was blocked and killed during the deal combat damage step then there would be nothing to copy.

I think he was fully aware of the Legend rule applying before anything else based on his question. He was just looking to cheat an extra Angel token I think. Lot of work for one temporary 4/4 though.

@TheDiregrafOverlord, theres a Q&A section.
also, no, it wouldn't b/c the trigger happens when attacks are declared, and ninjutsu happens long after that occurs.
