A creature with Deathtouch + Infect = ?

Asked by Dreno33 11 years ago

Say I have a Cunning Sparkmage equipped with a Basilisk Collar & Grafted Exoskeleton .

It now has deathtouch AND infect.

1) If I tapped it, would it KILL the creature? Or is it not considered "*damage" and turned into a -1/-1 counter on that creature?

2) What if my Cunning Sparkmage is attacking and is blocked, is the answer from question the same through combat?

3) Say I tap Cunning Sparkmage to hit the player for 1 and Curiosity is also enchanted on him. Even though it is in the form of poison counters ( Grafted Exoskeleton ), I would still draw a card and gain 1 life due to Curiosity & Basilisk Collar , correct?

From the Gatherer website on this card:

1/1/2011 Damage from a source with infect is damage in all respects. If the source with infect also has lifelink, damage dealt by that source also causes its controller to gain that much life. Damage from a source with infect can be prevented or redirected. Abilities that trigger on damage being dealt will trigger if a source with infect deals damage, if appropriate.

Yup. It all works like you expect it to. Infect is a static ability that changes the way damage is dealt. It is not a replacement effect, and the damage, therefore, still happens, and can cause triggered abilities to trigger. You still get life from lifelink, still destroy creatures from deathtouch, and still draw cards from Curiosity

1) Any non-zero damage dealt to a creature by another with deathtouch is enough to destroy it. This includes Cunning Sparkmage 's tap ability because the text states that it "deals 1 damage." The opposing creature will be destroyed from any amount of damage unless it is indestructible. If the opposing creature is indestructible, it will receive a -1/-1 counter.

2) If Cunning Sparkmage attacks and is blocked, the same rules apply as in number one.

3) Correct.
