Priority

Asked by Dammjan 1 year ago

Hey I got a question regarding priority: If I cast a boardwipe on my turn do I ve to immediately react to my spell casting by casting a spell like Teferi's Protection on the stack or can I wait for any responses of the other players like a Counterspell and then play my spell again. I am wondering because I gave my priority away

You won't get another chance at priority in this example unless someone actually does have a response. If no one does then the spell will start resolving and it will be too late for you to try to make a response to it.

If each player passes priority in succession then the top-most spell/ability on the stack will start to resolve. If there was nothing waiting on the stack then the game will move to the next step/phase of the turn. If you want to make a response to one of your own spells, the only way to be 100% sure you don't lose your chance is to hold priority after casting the spell and make your response at that time.

So the typical looking at other players at the table if they ve a reaction to your cast and after waiting for a non coming respone casting your own reaction spell to your original spell isn t viable, right?

Right, that isn't a valid play within the rules for how priority is supposed to work. If you ask your opponents if they have responses or clearly pause specifically to wait for a response then you've passed priority.

In the tournament rules it is stated "Whenever a player adds an object to the stack, they are assumed to be passing priority unless they explicitly announce that they intend to retain it." So in a tournament setting you are expected to clearly state that you are retaining priority.

In a casual setting it is a little more forgiving, but as Rhadamanthus says, if you clearly pause waiting for responses then you have passed priority. If you ask for responses you have unambiguously passed priority.

Personally I find that following the tournament procedures and explicitly announcing that you are retaining priority when you would like to do so causes the least amount of feel bads. Now this isn't to say that your opponents can say "I-pass-it-resolves" super quickly after you announce the Wrath to make you kill your own creatures if they know that you have Protection in hand. But pausing for more than a normal amount of time between sentences can be construed as passing and just adding "and retain priority" to the end of the spell announcement can go a long way towards clearly communicating what is happening in the game.
