"1 less to cast" reduce a cost of X?
Asked by ducttapedeckbox 12 years ago
Easiest explanation is with an example. Let's say I have Goblin Electromancer out with 5 untapped lands, with at least one being able to produce a red mana. If I miracle Bonfire of the Damned , will Goblin Electromancer 's ability allow me to deal 5 damage ("reducing" Bonfire of the Damned 's cost by 1)?
I hope my example makes sense
Total Cost = original + additions - subtractions
Let's say you hardcast Bonfire for 4 (x=2) so the mana cost is 4R
Then Goblin Electromancer makes you pay one less so the total cost is now 3R.
Simply take the total cost and subtract one colorless.

Here's a ruling form Etherium Sculptor (identical effect except for card type)
10/1/2008 This effect doesn't change the mana cost or converted mana cost of an artifact spell. Rather, it reduces the total cost of the spell, which is the amount you actually pay while casting it. The total cost takes into account additional or alternative costs.
and after a quick search, yes you can cast for 5 when you only have the mana to otherwise cast for 4.

Here's how the process works:
You announce that you are casting a spell. You choose its modes/targets/other variable values such as X, then determine its costs. The total casting cost of a spell is:
The spell's mana cost or alternative cost + any additional costs - any cost reductions.
In this case, Bonfire of the Damned is being cast for its miracle cost, which is an alternative cost. There is not additional cost, but there is a cost reduction of 1. Therefore, the total casting cost of this Bonfire of the Damned will be X+R-1.
If you say X=5, then it will cost 4R and deal 5 damage to the target player and all creatures he or she controls. You must state that X=5, though, so it is clear that you are setting X to 5, even though you are only paying 4R.

also, just to note, with 5 mana, casting a bonfire without the miracle cost won't reduce it by 2 r anything. with 5 mana you normally can cast bonfire for 2 damage, with goblin electromancer out, you can still onlyh cast it for 2 damage, because it would take 6 mana to pay what would normaly be 7 for the 3 damage.

yes, Goblin Electromancer effects do apply to x spells, and reduce the amount of mana that you have to pay for them.
