In this post, Mark Rosewater stated that WotC shall not print any new Masters sets in near future, and I am very displeased, about that, because I believe that WotC should be much more proactive with reprinting cards, to ensure that the cards remain inexpensive for average players.

What does everyone else say, about this? Do you also believe that WotC should be more proactive about reprinting cards and ensuring that cards remain affordable for the majority of players? I certainly hope that most other users here shall agree, with me, on this subject.

I think it's fine. In a similar-ish vein to sentiments I've shared on one of your past posts about Innistrad/Ravnica Remasters sets, I'm fine with Masters sets taking a backseat to sets that either:

  • Are new, first time explorations of planes (Bloomburrow, Edge of Eternities, etc)

  • Are returning to planes that haven't had a return set in a long time (Dragonstorm, Lorwyn Eclipsed in 2026, etc)

  • Generally any new supplemental set that explores design space that we might not see explored in a Standard-legal mainline set, but even this line is getting more blurred these days.

All in all, it makes sense that (Re)Masters sets may take a back seat for a bit for stuff listed above. I think newer EDH precons are trending in the direction of having decent reprints, and even mainline sets might have some sprinkled in here and there (Craterhoof Behemoth in Dragonstorm as one example). I think WotC should put more solid reprints into their other products, and we as a consumer base shouldn't have to rely so heavily on (Re)Masters sets to get those reprints.

It’s gotten to the point that I’d be glad to see any de-escalation of sets being released in general. I have a terrible time keeping abreast of the new cards, and I long for the days of a new set release feeling a little more special. It’s not a unique situation, really, so I don’t want to sound as though I’m just picking on wizards. TV shows and movies and music albums are all fun to look forward to, but with streaming services and studios competing with one another it seems like I’m pulled in too many directions at once to really enjoy any of them. Too many great people at the party that you want to visit with. Too many dogs at the park to pet. The weird thing is it’s Magic: the Gathering competing with… more Magic: the Gathering. A very odd “problem” I would never have expected to happen. TLDR: dropping one of the 99 flavors from the ice cream shop seems fine for me as well.

FormOverFunction, I definitely agree that WotC has been printing too many product, recently, but I also believe that they need to keep the game affordable for the players, so they should reprint cards more frequently, in my mind.

I think they have just changed their way of reprinting. Instead of one Master‘s Set, they are spreading it out to complementary sets.

If you look at Scryfall, these sets are listed under „Masterpiece“. These sets have all significantly reduced the prices on staples:

  • Lands: https://scryfall.com/sets/eos
  • Enchantments: https://scryfall.com/sets/wot
  • Instants: https://scryfall.com/sets/otp
