Attempting to get back in to MTG

Hello everyone. As the topic suggests, I have not played in quite some time (Since at least Lorwyn). I've got a general idea of how to play the game, but I'd just like to stop on some type of MTG forums to get advice on how to proceed with rebuilding my collection (I only really have 1 deck left that I used to play casually).

Are you looking to come back and play at fnm or just around the kitchen table with friends? Are you looking for some ideas on what decks to play? Or simply where to get cards for the deck you have in mind? Also welcome back.

I'm going to primarily be playing at some small casual events in a local card shop setting.

I generally like to play faster paced decks (My primary deck back when I played seriously was Elf/Token, combination of Lorwyn, Onslaught and Legion card).

What are some of the general themes of the most recent sets? I'm pretty flexible in what I can play, but I generally prefer either Mono-green or Mono-black

i mean if youre not going to get into anything super competitive you can look at Theros block which was highly focused on mono-colored decks with a mechanic called devotion that is sorta like chroma, which as i recall was around the lorwyn time.

i mean theres a lot you've missed since you were out but the most recent sets are

battle for zendikar (a return to zendikar. although i don't think they had gone to zendikar for the first time when you were last in)this set focused on several horrors that came and decimated a lush mana rich plane. theres some good green ramp cards you can pick up in here probably. (idk for sure i'm not the biggest green player).

shadows over innistrad (return to innistrad which also wasn't visited when you were last in if i remember the order of sets). remember the horrors i mentioned? they came to a new plane and proceeded to mess stuff up there as well. theres lots of cards that transform in this block. Theres some nice flavorful black cards in this set if memory serves.

kaladesh is an artifact matters set. lots of artifacts and things that care about artifacts. powerful set. revolt as a mechanic is interesting and Fatal Push is a great card to look out for.

newest set that will be released soon is amonkeht and its egyptian theme. black white zombies are a thing now. green has some really exciting creatures in this set.

you can also look into modern which may have more of the cards your familiar with. its a format that i don't think was around when you last played. if you know extended it is sorta a replacement for that. its basically everything current back until like 7th edition or something. so theres a chance some of your old cards may still work in this format. idk just thought i'd let you know.

best bet for mono colors is in something like Theros though. look for Gray Merchant of Asphodel.

I'd recommend attending a prerelease this weekend. The new set, Amonkhet, is coming out, and most stores will be running several events this weekend, typically for somewhere between 25-30 dollars, which gets you several booster packs, from which you build your deck and compete. It's a fun thing to do for pretty much anyone, from pros to newcomers.
