Why do menfolk decks use Aquitect's Will over Spreading Seas?

Just looking at a lot of decks, and curious. Other than the benefit of making it only an Island, Spreading Seas seems as thought it is worse than Aquitect's Will b/c it is less mana and gives you card advantage.

Spreading seas can kill a good number of lands with extra abilities. I've used spreading seas to shut down some Valakuts, to deprive multicolour decks of a colour, and to generally just mess with them. Aquitects is a mana cheaper, but doesn't deprive them of anything

got a decent chuckle at the title. Thought that the merfolk cards were a good spread of men and women, not just men.

The flood counter doesn't make it only an Island, it makes it an Island in addition to its other types. That's a bit important.

Mostly because it's cheaper, and still draws a card while not being susceptible to removal. Imagine I'm saying this in a way that demands italics.

lol

But yea, that clause that makes it an island in addition to it's other types makes it much much worse than Spreading Seas.

Being able to put your opponent off of their colors is a massive play in a ton of matchups. Spreading Seas can often win a match on it's own if your opponent keeps a greedy hand. It can shut down decks like Tron and Bloom Titan. It can shut down a Gavony Township. It can shut down an opposing Mutavault or Cavern of Souls to allow your counter magic to work.

Spreading Seas is an amazing card even without providing an island for your fish to swim through and is a sideboard card in some non-merfolk decks. It was a massive player in Standard back in the day for those reasons.

maybe they occasionally want to play it on their own Mutavault and still be able to attack with it.

Maybe for an aggressive deck like merfolk, that 1 mana matters more than being able to deprive their opponent of something or other.
