I just want to know what people's opinions are on the new things are like the m13 deckbuilders toolkit, the new duel deck, ect.

Are you looking for older stuff or newer stuff?

Honestly, the deckbuilder's toolkit isn't worth it. It's got only about two copies of a bunch of commons/uncommons and I think three boosters. Not worth the money (in my opinion.)

Personally, I would buy a fat pack (Nine boosters, lands, some other goodies) and then as many extra booster packs as I could (depends on the budget.)

If you have the money, you should go somewhere else and buy a box. It's 36 booster packs in a box (hence the name.) Whenever a new set comes out (and if I have the money) I buy a box and a fat pack. That's 45 boosters, 15 cards a booster equaling 675 cards. Of course, that's somewhat expensive.

Here's my opinion based on your budget:

~$30: Buy just packs. You won't get much worthwhile from anything else.

~$50: A fat pack + boosters. Better chance at good cards.

~$100: A box. Tons of cards, decent chances at cards you want.

~$150: A box and a fat pack. (See above for reason.)

~$200: Two boxes.

If you have money for those last three (and higher,) you should probably wait till RTR is released. New cards. If you have less than thirty, save your money for later.

I disagree with Carsf's analysis. Fat packs are one of the lest economical ways to get cards; it's cheaper to just buy the equivalent number of booster packs.

In terms of economics, booster boxes are best. Then packs, then fat packs.

If you're only looking for a few cards, buying the singles is better than buying a bunch of product.

Well, I would never recommend buying fat packs in bulk. If you're JUST looking for cards, then yes, steer clear of fat packs.

I keep wanting to just buy a playset of every Uncommon and common and then figure out what I want to build and buy the rares. I always see U+C playsets listed at like $60 or less if you shop around.

I always end up buying a box+ though because the stupid thrill of the hunt gets to me...

Walmart DOES sell those "random" 3 packs and the promo for $10. (I say "random" because they are almost always packs that are in standard.) Sometimes you luck out, got 2x Batterskull and a promo Brion Stoutarm and a promo Terastodon that way.

I'm personally a fan of the Deckbuilder's Toolkit, if only because, for a new player of the game, it gives you a solid number of basic lands to build with, as well as an array of commons and uncommons in rotation as an indicator of what to expect, with the fun of cracking the four packs they contain from the most recent block and core sets. That said, in terms of bang for your buck, if you have some experience with the game, it's not the best choice. The Walmart 3-for-$11 deal isn't bad if you don't have a tonne of cash, but frankly, if you have money to burn, wait two weeks and buy a box of the Return to Ravnica set. If you're absolutely broke and want bulk cards, and you don't mind playing the pauper format, a lot of online vendors will offer a package with four of each common from a recent set for around $20-25 before shipping.

To address the Duel Decks question: Always and unequivocably, "Yes." I have never once encountered a Duel Deck set that sold for even close to what the singles would fetch, and since they usually include staples of the various formats, there are some cards you'll open that you will use over and over again. Izzet vs. Golgari is no exception.

what is a 3 pack and promo thing called? it sounds interesting

Not sure what it's called. They have them in most wallymarts. its just a clear packaging with one promo card, flipped so you see the back (It can be a foil land even) then it has three random packs. I don't know who puts them together but meh.

I say always ALWAYS get a Duel Deck I mean 20$ is a sweet deal, they are limited run, you get sweet alt art cards, and if you try to buy the set later online they can go for insane prices look up Elves vs Goblins or Divine vs Demonic. As for the Toolkits and Fat Packs I'd say it is up to you, I personally like them for the box to be frank, its nice to be able to buy a package that can look good, give you some packs, and store them in thats what I do, and I have gotten very good pulls from my boxes A Garruk from Toolkit for M12 a Jace in M12 fat pack, dual lands etc. Now obviously your best bet if you got the money is in the Booster Boxes if you can afford them and you can even get a promo for doing it :p The 3 pack thing is pretty cool though in the walmarts I've been to here they show the foil promo face out and yea its usually standard packs i only got it once but Scars, ISD, and M12 were the ones I got

The M13 deckbuilder's toolkit is worth the $20. You get 4 boosters, 1 ISD, 1 DKA, 1 AVR, and 1 M13. So nothing old and all of it will be Standard until Octoberish of 2013. The remaining $4 goes to a bunch of uncommons and commons that are at least useful to a player who doesn't already have them.

The new Izzet vs. Golgari duel decks are awesome and fun, but you would be hard-pressed to make a standard deck out of either of them, so it depends what you want to build.

While fat packs are definitely not economical. I've actually had ridiculous luck with fat packs. Every one that I've ever opened has given me a money mythic. Not to suggest its anything more than luck, but at the same time I've bought one for nearly every set since ROE and I've never not gotten one of the top 4-5 mythics in the box or at least 2-3 of the better rares.

I like FatPacks, but I only ever buy 1 of a set. You're paying $4 for the box, the deck boxes (not useful for sleeved decks but pretty,) and the "spin-down" life counter. Spin-up graveyard counter if you already have a cell phone. My shop usually sells used FatPack boxes for $1, and that's the best of those 4 items, anyway.

September 21, 2012 2:31 p.m.

spin up graveyard counter?

September 21, 2012 5:54 p.m.

Ohthenoises says... #17

For cards that care about what your graveyard count is he would use the counter for that purpose. (Threshold, etc.)
