Question about standard legal reprints

Cancel was reprinted in RTR, my friend says that if I want to use cancel, I have to have the RTR one. He says the picture of the reprint must look exactly alike to the one i am using. Is this true? if not can you send me to a wizards page to prove him wrong?

You can play with any of the standard legal cards, regardless of the set they were printed in.

Example:Dissipate is currently standard legal, therefore you can use the old print (Mirage).

Can't find the rule for it. But call any store that hosts a FNM and they will tell you the same.

Your friend is mistaken. The rule for this comes from the Magic Tournament Rules (MTR) document. Section 6.1 reads in part: "...A card may only be used in a particular format if the card is from a set that is legal in that format or has the same name as a card from a set that is legal in that format..."

It would be a real jerk move to make everyone have to get brand new copies of cards they already have, and WotC knows that.

I was under the impression that white-bordered cards arent legal though, am I mistaken on that one?

Yes, you're mistaken on that point. The following list of legal qualities for a card is from MTR Section 3.3:

  • The card is genuine and published by Wizards of the Coast
  • The card has a standard Magic back or is a double-faced card.
  • The card does not have squared corners.
  • The card has black or white borders.
  • The card is not a token card.
  • The card is not damaged or modified in a way that might make it marked.
  • The card is otherwise legal for the tournament as defined by the format.
  • The card is a proxy issued by the judge of a tournament (see section 3.4 for rules about proxies).

Cards with silver or gold borders are the illegal ones, since they are from joke or collector printings.
