Primal Surge

A comment on a post has me wanting to run Primal Surge in a deck but I'm concerned that the new land play rule will neuter the card. Will you still be able to put lands into play with the Primal Surge or will revealing a land with no land plays left end the surge chain?

Technically Primal Surge doesn't play lands, it puts them onto the battlefield. You should be ok. The new ruling mostly effects cards that say "you may plan an additional land..."

Primal Surge doesn't interact with the new land play rules, because it uses the term put a permanent onto the battlefield rather than play that permanent. You can put as many lands as you reveal onto the battlefield with primal surge, and still use your land play for the turn afterwards, assuming you didn't use it beforehand.

There are two ways to "play" a land. You can play a land card as a special action during your turn and at sorcery speed, or you can put a land card onto the battlefield from another zone. Primal Surge does the latter, and is therefore unaffected by the M14 rules update. This update will only affect effects that modify how many special action land drops you get per turn.

Also, questions like this are best asked in the Q&A.

I don't believe so. Primal Surge gather page has no update to it. It is a may ability, but I would think you could still put as many lands into play as found, since the gather page describes a permanent as "an artifact, creature, enchantment, land, or planeswalker card."

In short this may be the exception to the new rule.

@gufymike: It isn't an exception. The new rule just doesn't apply to lands that are put onto the battlefield as an effect and not as a special action.

The new land ruling applies to cards like Oracle of Mul Daya
