Best Deck Box for a Double-Sleeved Deck
Gear forum
Posted on June 30, 2015, 11:32 a.m. by UpsetYoMama
So I've been getting more into modern and I just recently double-sleeved all of my decks (because playing with things like Tarmogoyf warrants this).
My problem now is that the decks are too thick / big to fit in traditional deck boxes.
I know there are Tower deck boxes but these just seem huge and bulky.
Has anyone else ran into this problem? Any suggestions on good deck boxes that don't take up huge amounts of space? Right now I'm just keeping the decks in fat pack boxes, but I don't really like this.
Thanks.

The YouTube channel of Tolarian Community College covers stuff like this.

Thanks JakeHarlow, that's some good information.
CharlesMandore Thanks, I will check out their videos.
Sorry Epochalyptik, I should have read stuff before posting. I usually only post stuff on decks or discussions people have already created, so I wasn't aware that there are specific categories.

I use both the faux leather and satin tower deck boxes for my EDH decks, and they seem to hold over 100 single sleeved cards with ease, I'm sure they'd work for 60 double sleeved cards.

Do not use the Faux leather boxes from ultra pro unless you're never going to introduce it into an environment where it will get shaken about. I owned two, and three different times the box has opened in my backpack and damaged my cards. I was upset ... and all I lost were a couple sleeves, basic land, and a Temple of Plenty. If you lose a mint condition Tarmogoyf to those boxes you will be really crappy about it. They look nice, and they work fine if they're just holding a deck on your book shelf but I strongly recommend against using them in any other more demanding capacity. It's just not worth the chance the magnets will poop out on you.
Personally I favor the Legion Iconic deck boxes. They fit 75 double sleeved cards and come with a divider for sideboard. They're cheap but look stylish. They are a good size. I also find the satin tower awesome but way too bulky for a modern deck.

Hmm that's good to know, JRaynor. Was that because the magnet on the deck box had worn out or was faulty?
I carry deck boxes in my backpack all the time, especially to FNM, so I don't want my cards falling out.
And I assume you're talking about these?

Someone showed me there Ultimate Guard flip with magnet (like the ultra pro) and they are better then the ultra pro ones. The magnet is 2x or maybe 3x stronger then ultra pro and the width is smaller. There is only a little bit of room between the card and the side of the box. With the ultra pro boxes i have been putting paper towels on the side so the cards do not slide (I keep the cards tight so no air can get in). It has the same length and height as the ultra pro too.

I also remember that the inside is also a bit nicer.

If you like to have all your decks in separate boxes, you might not go for this, but you can keep them in one big box all together, something like this. They come in just about every size out there, so it shouldn't be hard to find one that fits all your cards. As a bonus, most LGSs sell them.

Thanks, The-Xellos, that's another good option. A bit more expensive, but if it works better it's probably worth it.
ThisIsBullshit Thanks for the suggestion. There are a couple of people at my LGS who do similar, but I'm not really a fan of that method. I'd rather have individual deck boxes.

Up at my end Ultra Pro boxes are about 13.99-15.99. The person that showed me this was demoing it to see if there was interest and to try it out. I have not seen these in stores, but I would think that they would sell at same price or a little lower to compete with Ultra Pro.

It's not so much faulty as it is just poor design. The majority of magnet based deck box designs just don't work because unless you have a super strong magnet, a good jolt like you get from dropping your backpack a foot onto the floor by the table you're playing at just knocks the box open.
The FLIP'n'TRAY XENOSKIN DECK CASE is a good example of a deck box designed to take advantage of a magnetic clasp. The magnet clasp is positioned to latch shut in a different direction than the box is opened. Thus shut, the cards are not pushing directly against the clasp, greatly enhancing the travel seal without increasing the difficulty in opening the box.
My friend has one and has never had a problem. The professor on Tolarian Community College also gave these deck boxes a good review. My friend likes em well enough, and if you wanted something with a magnet I would say check them out over the Ultra pro ones.
And yes, those are the boxes I myself use, They aren't as high end as the Xenoskin or the faux leather ones but they get the job done very well.

I use the mana flip boxes from Ultra Pro and I put them in a ThinkGeek Bag of Holding bag. They don't get knocked about at all. If you're using a backpack, I wouldn't be tossing it around, especially if my Tarmogoyfs are sitting in it somewhere.

JakeHarlow, where would I get the BCW card dividers that you were talking about?

You can look on Amazon and get a bunch for cheap (volume discount; just search "BCW Card Dividers"). Most moderately-sized local game stores sell them too. So there's that as well.

The Flip'n'Tray Xenoskin deckbox is amazing. Enough space for a double sleeved 60 card deck and sideboard as well as a few tokens, small enough to squeeze out air bubbles, and it has the dice compartment. Because of the way the magnets are located and how the latch closes, it will almost never open accidentally. The removable trays make it easy to take your deck out as well. Highly recommended. Out of curiosity, what sleeves do you use to double sleeve?

Just look up the reviews by TolarianCommunityCollege.

Femme_Fatale is correct. For a thorough exploration of your options just watch the series of reviews on deckboxes by the Professor. I bought my mana flip boxes before I started watching the Tolarian Community College.
JakeHarlow This is the bag I use to carry my laptop, so I'm extra careful with it and yet the boxes still came open on multiple occasions. If you already have them and you're making them work, that's fine but these boxes are more expensive, less functional, and do not protect your cards well enough to entrust any deck of value to them.

@ JRaynor: No argument here -- the boxes are overpriced as hell and the magnet lid leaves much to be desired. However, I'm not really sure how those things are popping open. I guess I'm especially attentive to mitigating wear and tear on mine, but I guess that only goes so far. At any rate, they're good for squeezing air bubbles out of double sleeved cards.

Strangely enough, those faux leather Ultra Pro mana flip boxes will do the trick. I like to use BCW card dividers in the front and back in order to keep everything flat. You'll need to gently put the whole double sleeved deck in there, then firmly (but gently!!) slide the BCW divider into the front. If you do it slowly and carefully, you'll notice all the air pockets being forced safely out of the sleeves. This reduces the deck width by a great deal. Leave the deck box for a couple of days, and you'll have a double sleeved deck that will easily fit and doesn't have those annoying air bubbles that inflate freshly-double-sleeved cards. It does work for 75 cards and you won't damage any at all.
Also, the Ultra Pro Satin Tower boxes can easily hold the double sleeved decks. If you're just putting a 75 in there, though, you won't solve the air bubble problem because the box itself is very spacious. It won't squeeze the bubbles out. Still, I like these boxes because they will do the desired trick for a double-sleeved Commander deck (100 cards). (note: BCW card dividers don't work for the Satin Towers because they're slightly too tall. If you want card dividers for this box, get the Ultra Pro brand ones; they will fit.)
I hope this helps.
