Scavenging Ooze or Lotleth Troll?

Deck Help forum

Hey guys,

I'm unable to spend a lot of time testing my deck and have trouble picking the best card. I'm trying to decided between Scavenging Ooze and Lotleth Troll in my deck Golgari Evasion. I have a special place in my heart for both these cards, but I feel Lotleth Troll just fits a little better. However, I've noticed that the professional MTG players that play a similar deck usually use Scavenging Ooze . Any comments or suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

Here's what I consider the pros and cons, hopefully you can help me through this:

Scavenging Ooze

Pros:

Life gain.

Can get huge.

Best MTG bear ever?

Mess with an opponent's graveyard if needed.

Cons:

No evasion--just dies to all the removal in the format.

Can't get through tokens or regenerate creatures.

Green ability can be hard to use with the few amount of forests/green sources this deck has.

Eats up food for your Whip of Erebos if you start getting desperate.

Lotleth Troll

Pros:

Regenerate. Blocks for days!

Trample.

Can get huge-ish.

Lets me chuck dead creatures into the graveyard for added benefit (this is a stretch)

Evasive (regenerate, black)

Cons:

Can keep you from playing as fast due to keeping mana open for regenerate.

You need to toss a dude from your hand to get him +1/+1. Almost never worth it with such high value creatures.

Thanks guys!

Both good, if you have the whip, lotleth troll might fit better, remember you can discard then unearth to give a dude haste in time to win a match.

Scavenging Ooze is amazing, but gets worse in multiples. Lotleth Troll is often just bad.

Can you guys elaborate?

Well, Lotleth Troll gets bigger by discarding creatures, thereby feeding Scavenging Ooze and allowing him to get bigger too. Now you've got 2 threats in play, and your a turn or 2 away from dropping a fatty or something.

Discarding to the troll is almost always wrong. The only circumstances it should be done are when it would win the game, trade with another creature, or evade a burn spell (and this only if you do not have regenerate mana up). Most creatures are better in hand then as counters on the troll. I have probably won a dozen games to players who discarded too much to the troll.

I agree with you Blakkhand, I probably wouldn't discard for the troll unless I had one Reaper of the Wilds in hand when my opponent plays a Lifebane Zombie . Or I was within a few point of damage from winning the game.
