Any Booster Boxes/Sets That Compliment The Scarab God/Dimir

Commander Deck Help forum

I'm a fairly new player: I've only been playing since 2013, and until recently, I've always bought singles, and while that won't change any time soon, I've recently developed an addiction to buying booster boxes because I have discovered some real hidden gems that I would have never heard about on sites like EDHREC and learning about each set's history is also really fun for me.

Anyhow, while I would prefer to spend $140 or less on a set, I was curious if you guys could recommend any sets that had a significant number of cards that could complement a dimir and/or zombie tribal deck: the best thing that comes to mind is the Sworn to Darkness precon.

I'm talking zombies, wheel effects, recursion, dredge: just efficient graveyard shenanigans in a dimir color combination.

That may seem like a stupid request to put forth, especially since Amonkhet and Hour of Devastation are obvious choices in terms of flavor and similar mechanics, and there probably aren't many cut-and-dry choices from a mechanical point of view, but I figured that I would just ask on the off-chance that such a magical booster box existed.

I mean, I thought that Mist-Cloaked Herald was amazing, just because of how well it slotted into my Edric, Spymaster of Trest weenies deck.

Discovering cool and seemingly worthless cards like that is half the fun for me, and I've found lots of interesting stuff like that.

I would look at the Innistrad block. That set contained Stitcher Geralf and Ghoulcaller Gisa both zombie loving, Geralf is blue and Gisa is black. This set really lends itself to blue/black zombies

I agree with Skulde13 the block has a bunch of gems centered around the brother and sister. Add to it the shadows over inistrad block.

There are a ton of hidden gems for zombies in dark ascension which is part of the inistrad block.

Skulde13 Those cards only came from the commander deck. Not innistrad.

Just buy singles, don't bother with a box.

If you are just looking for some random gems, try buying someone's collection on like craigslist or something.

Thank you for the information, and while it is admittedly more sensible to purchase singles, I've only recently indulged in opening booster packs, and I really enjoy it.

i feel like I don't really have any connection to many of the previous sets or understand them that well because all I ever really purchased were singles, so it's just something that I do for fun and flavor, even though it's a gamble.

Just figured I'd at least get a box that allowed me to snag a few of the cards that I need along the way.

You could try original ravnica block or its return block

I buy singles often as well but there is a little bit of thrill to open a booster pack. I know it may not be the most efficient way to get cards but for some of us opening packs is part of the fun of the game.

Dude, if you're going to crack old boxes, you're going to lose SO MUCH MONEY. Only do this is you feel like opening stuff with friends is worth it.

Why does everyone here seem to care if someone is going to lose money by opening packs/boxes? Sometimes the pleasure of opening is worth the cost.

if your going to buy a box you should do so to draft with it for fun. It gives you more value out of the box.

@Skulde13 - Dropping something like $300 on an Innistrad box and fail to flip a Liliana or a Snapcaster Mage and tell me how you feel.

It's undoubtedly one of the best things to draft EVER, but damn is it expensive. My friends treated themselves to a box for Christmas and they flipped like $100 from a garbage fire box. That means they spent $200 to draft Innistrad twice with.

If you think about it, that's about the same price and duration as taking 6 of your friends to watch a movie twice. As far as paying for entertainment is concerned, that's still a ton, but not insane.

People complain about buying boxes (especially old ones), because you're unlikely to ever come close to making your money back but a large portion of the community doesn't seem to respect that. As long as you're aware that the cost of a box will primarily be for entertainment, you're fine. The issue arises when there are people like OP that want to crack boxes to 'discover' new cards and get something for their EDH decks.
