Are there Any Games that Encourage Careful, Methodical, and Defensive Playing?

I have no problem with WotC emphasizing aggressive and offensive strategies in M:tG, but I severely dislike how they are not giving sufficient focus to defensive and methodical strategies, so are there any other games, board games, card games, or otherwise, that encourage players to play in a cautious and calculated manner and that also punish players for being too reckless and aggressive? I am very interested to receive feedback on this subject!

"Tower Defense" is a whole genre of strategy-based video games that have you arrange and build defensive structures to protect a central point from multiple waves of attackers. Maybe something like that could provide the sort of game experience you are looking for?

Long-term expansion based board games punish recklessly aggressive players. Games are disinclined from 'caution' as a (primary) strategy and instead reward proper timing and appropriate risk-reward management.

Twilight Imperium (recent: 4th ED) and its cousin Eclipse are two board games where conflicts inherently favor the defender, and as such, attackers are forced to correctly manage and calculate their decisions. I personally very much enjoy Eclipse but TI has a very large following (I blame the space kitties).

Simpler board games including Diplomacy, Axis and Allies, and Risk of course exist and (depending on your play group) may also result in the experience you seek.

I don't know if you've ever tried the older Baldurs Gate 2, but it's a great slow strategic game. On core rules difficulty you have to scout upcoming problems, buff accordingly, and plan everything. You don't need to have played BG1 for story, it is continued but it will make sense, and it might take a while to get into the DnD combat rules, but it's an absolute classic.

I still wish we had mana burn in M:tG to punish the wildly explosive streams of mana we can see these days. That always seemed to put a damper on the fast and loose play.

I think there should be an expression, "Anything that you hate about Magic the Gathering is already solved by Chess; everything you hate about Chess is solved by Magic the Gathering." The two games are very good companions, and if you're sick of one the other might be just right.

…and if neither of those quite scratch your itch, good old Steve Jackson has you covered (as he ALWAYS does) with Knightmare Chess. It’s a blast. I had forgotten about that… I should go dig up my copy.

FormOverFunction, I miss mana burn, as well, as it punished players who were too greedy and aggressive with their playing, so I would like to see more cards that do that.

DemonDragonJ I’ve been VERY tempted to make a zero cmc artifact that reinstitutes mana burn Most of the folks I play with would be okay with it, I think. Some sort of obelisk or totem or something. Free for any deck someone might have.
