Thassa's Oracle Update: Unifying Dommsday and Pact —Jan. 11, 2020

Hello everyone,

As many of you know already Thassa's Oracle is an immensely powerful card in UB CEDH decks, but for Circu this means the unification of the Tainted Pact and Doomsday builds.

Thassa's Oracle circumvents the need to run the Yawg's Will + Gush interaction in Doomsday piles. This means that the most efficient Doomsday lines now need only half the number of islands in order to go off which is very doable on a Tainted Pact base.

This is exciting news and my deck/ this primer will adjust accordingly.

Have a happy weekend all!

An interesting take on Lantern Control.

I'm curious to hear your take on Strionic Resonator , as a way to piggyback off of Paradox Engine for a mana neutral infinite.

The way that process would work, if you're not familiar with it, is as follows...

===========================

  1. Resolve P./Engine. Cast a spell then untap all mana rocks.

  2. Find and cast Resonator, and Voltaic Key.

  3. Resolve Circu (unless he's already on the field).

  4. Cast a blue or black spell with Circu on field; hold priority with Engine trigger and Circu trigger on stack.

4a. Use Resonator to copy the Engine trigger, unlock Resonator with Key, then use Resonator again to copy the Engine trigger a second time. (This'll create 2 separate instances of Paradox Engine's cast trigger.)

4b. Let the first Engine cast trigger resolve, then repeat the loop in 4a. (This in turn creates infinite [an arbitrarily large amount] amount of cast triggers of Paradox Engine, provided you can make 5 mana from all non-land sources.)

4c. With infinite cast triggers of Paradox Engine, infinitely copy the cast trigger on Circu to deck all opponents.

==========================

Personally I'm not all that hot on Mnemonic Betrayal , as it's reliant on the graveyards of others. You could feasibly pull that out for Resonator, as this interaction doesn't require Isochron Scepter to function.

You have one of my favortite Circu lists on here! If you get the chance check out my list Circu Soleil, I'm currently in the process of fine tuning. How effective would you say Paradox Engine is in the deck if you can't combo off with it?

Another question, how do u make uba mask work? And how often has Mnemonic worked out for you? Thanks!

Hi simondiamond2012

These are great thoughts, and that's absolutely another way to get a win out. The one thing I'd say before selecting that line over others is that you want things to be as tight as possible.

Strionic Resonator would essentially be filling the same role as Sensei's Divining Top in the Paradox Engine line. Top + Key + Paradox Engine allows you to draw your deck infinitely and you can win by just casting a bunch of spells with circu or a mill rock out, or wheeling the table to death from there with Notion Thief + Timetwister.

Strioic Resonator will get the kill but you just want to make sure that you're not sitting on a dead card at times. Basically you're weighing giving up a spot in the deck that could be used for something very live with a consistent impact (removal, tutor, whatever) for a combo piece with both a high ceiling and low floor. Ultimately these sorts of choices are up to you when as you build your own build, but it will shine more brightly if you're brewing in a higher combo density for turning on the engine consistently.

Thank you so much for your kind words naturesnake420 . That really means a lot.

This is only one of my many Circu takes and your question about the importance of Paradox Engine is a really good one. Paradox Engine is unquestionably stronger in a UBG/x Thrasios deck where they can combo it with their general + sensei's divining top. The truth about that card here in circu is that it's a secondary combo (scepter takes the number one spot) which has strong synergy with both what the general does and the other combos in the deck. But it's not the only path you can take.

Equally viable are:

Doomsday

Laboratory Maniac + Demonic Consultation

and

Future Sight + Sensei's Divining Top + Helm of Awakening

which creates a win very similar to the engine line.

Which secondary combo you pick really, truly is up to you. Each one has their own unique strengths and weaknesses and I recommend playing around with them to find which ones you like the most.

As for Uba Mask, that card should not be in this particular deck due to the high counter and draw density, and I really just need to get around to editing. It works in Circu but the thing to keep in mind is that the more you drift into staxing and topdeck control, the stronger it gets.

Demonic Consultation can find a missing scepter piece, or it can function with labman/ jace.

While it's tempting only to see it as part of the consult combo, it's actually more powerful as a scepter tutor.

There's a few legitimate ways to make cedh circu and cards listed above are what constitutes the 'core' cards that are going to cross builds.

The primer is in construction right now and I realize it's a little bit confusing at the moment. But doing it in this way lets me talk about both dday and consult style circu decks in one primer and is a much more informative and accurate way to talk about the general. Still formatting things though and am very much taking suggestions
