What is the Legend rule?

Asked by Timmy_Appleseed 7 years ago

I was reading another question and he mentioned the "legendary rule", something about not having too many on the battlefield maybe? Is there a rule that says u can have only one legendary creature on the battlefield at a time?

There's indeed such a rule - it's a state-based action:

704.5k. If a player controls two or more legendary permanents with the same name, that player chooses one of them, and the rest are put into their owners' graveyards. This is called the "legend rule."

Note that this does not count as destruction or sacrificing. But it does count as dying (for creatures).

Note that you can have any number of legendary permanents on the battlefield, as long as they all have different names. The legend rule only cares about whether you have multiple legendary permanents with the same name.
