Volrath the Shapestealer and upkeep effects?

Asked by DrukenReaps 4 years ago

So I'm unsure if Volrath, the Shapestealer works with effects that take place at the beginning of your upkeep. Specifically I would like to use Mycoloth in my Volrath deck but would Volrath be able to make the tokens?

No, Volrath, the Shapestealer will not be able to produce saprolings if it copies Mycoloth .

Volrath's copy ability lasts "until your next turn," which means at the start of your turn (essentially the beginning of the untap step), Volrath stops being a copy of anything. Mycoloth 's ability triggers at the start of your upkeep, which comes after the untap step, so by the time the ability would trigger, Volrath is no longer a copy. And since players don't receive priority to cast spells or activate abilities until the upkeep step (at which point Mycoloth would have triggered), even if you have Volrath copy Mycoloth again at your earliest possibility, that will be during your upkeep, after all "at the beginning of your upkeep" triggers have already triggered, which is too late.
