The Gitrog Monster and discarding dregders + lands during the discard step

Asked by AllAroundGeek 8 years ago

I have The Gitrog Monster in play and reach the discard step with 9 cards in hand, so I discard a Stinkweed Imp and a land, can I use The Gitrog Monster's trigger to dredge back Stinkweed Imp. If so, can I continue to do instant speed things in response to these triggers during the cleanup step, and if I'm done the turn and have more than 7 cards in hand again after all The Gitrog Monster shenanigans, do I discard again?

Dredge can replace any draw you would make for any reason.

Players normally don't get priority during the cleanup step. However, if an ability triggers during the cleanup step (as is the case when you discard a land card during the cleanup step and The Gitrog Monster's ability triggers), then players do get priority. You'll be able to cast spells and activate abilities. After the stack is empty and players pass priority in succession, the game will move to a new cleanup step.

Because the game always institutes a new cleanup step any time priority was passed in the current cleanup step, you'll have to continue to discard down to your maximum hand size if something causes you to have more than that number of cards in your hand.
