Sword of Kaldra vs regenerate mechanic

Asked by radicalifornian 4 years ago

If my opponent has Sword of Kaldra attached to their creature, they attack me and I block with a 1/1 creature that can regenerate, does the current rules errata mean my blocker doesn't get destroyed because it doesn't receive any damage ("remove all damage", plus it's removed from combat)? Furthermore, does this mean the blocking creature should not be removed from the game due to the Sword's ability?

If you regenerate the creature, it won't be destroyed because the the regeneration shield will replace it being destroyed by removing all marked damage, removing the creature from combat, and tapping it. Sword of Kaldra's triggered ability will still trigger, because damage was dealt even though it was removed. When the ability resolves, it will exile the creature as long as it's on the battlefield. As a note, if you didn't regenerate the creature it would be in the graveyard so it wouldn't be exiled.

In addition, in order to actually dodge the triggered ability (have it not happen at all), you would have to actually prevent the damage in the first place in order to not meet the trigger criteria.

Regeneration is a replacement effect that changes what happens "the next time [regenerated creature] would be destroyed this turn." It doesn't prevent damage, it only removes already-dealt damage as part of its effect.
