Switching the targets of spells that specify you as a target?

Asked by Ketamine_Monkey 9 years ago

I played Psychic Spiral to try and finish of my buddy and end a two-hour Commander game we had been playing, but he responded with a Wild Ricochet and said I would have to mill instead. I told him I didn't think he could change the target since I hadn't targeted myself, but he insisted that his play would flip my Psychic Spiral to essentially becoming his spell. I just wanted the game to end so I let him have it, but I still don't think it should have gone down that way. Can anyone help clear this up?

Please link the cards you're referring to.
Psychic Spiral / Wild Ricochet

Wild Ricochet doesn't change control of the spell, thus the original Psychic Spiral will still shuffle your graveyard into your library, but it does target, which Wild Ricochet may change, meaning he can turn it on you.
Furthermore, Wild Ricochet also makes a copy of the spell, controlled by your opponent, which will cause him to shuffle his graveyard into his library and mill a target player for that much (presumably you).

It's worth noting, however, that "you" in the text of an object will always refer to that object's controller, and it is not the same as "target."
