Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker and Sarkhan the Mad on the battlefield at the same time?

Asked by NDR700 9 years ago

Suppose I have a Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker on the battlefield and I activate his +1 ability, turning him into a dragon.

My question is, as he is not a Planeswalker when this ability is active and presumably does not retain his Planeswalker subtype, can I play another Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker , Sarkhan Vol or Sarkhan the Mad during the rest of my turn?

Yes you certainly can. As you mention, Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker stops being a planeswalker and gains the creature type. You will be able to play another "Sarkhan" without the Planeswalker uniqueness rule applying.

However, when end of turn comes around, Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker will stop being a creature and become a planeswalker again. If you still have another Sarkhan on the field, you will then need to decide which one stays on the battlefield and which one gets put in to the graveyard.

I think one of the gatherer rulings actually answers this question quite nicely:

"9/20/2014 - After the first ability resolves, Sarkhan wont be a planeswalker until the end of the turn. Later that turn, if you cast another Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker, neither permanent will be put into its owners graveyard. The legend rule sees only the original Sarkhan and the planeswalker uniqueness rule sees only the new Sarkhan. However, if you activate the first ability of the new Sarkhan, you would then control two legendary permanents with the same name. Youd choose one to remain on the battlefield and the other would be put into its owners graveyard. If you dont activate the first ability of the new Sarkhan, the original Sarkhan will return to being a planeswalker during the cleanup step. You would then control two planeswalkers with the same planeswalker type. Youd choose one to remain on the battlefield and the other would be put into its owners graveyard. There would then be another cleanup step before the turn ended."

Wow thank you for an amazing combo idea. I too had questions about that as I am running Sarkhan Vol, Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker, and Sarkhan the Mad in my EDH deck. This could get really interesting since it is a very dragon heavy deck. So ok I go +1 on Dragonspeaker, then cast Sarkhan the Mad and go -4, so that all dragons on the battlefield deal direct damage to target player. Then, I go to combat. End of turn Sarkhan the Mad goes in the graveyard.
