Responding to checks at beginning of upkeep

Asked by LordArazeal 8 years ago

Before a check resolves, in this instance Near-Death Experience, can i play and resolve other spells, in this case Lim-Dul's Vault. I want to change my life total before it checks what my life total is.

It depends on how the trigger works. Near-Death Experience has an "intervening 'if' clause" which checks to see if you have exactly 1 life. It checks this immediately as your upkeep starts to determine if the ability triggers at all. It will then also check that condition again as the ability starts to resolve. There is, however, no time before the initial check to cast a spell which could reduce your life to 1.

Things that trigger at the beginning of step "S" check the trigger condition immediately as S begins. You don't get priority until after turn-based actions are performed and triggered abilities are put onto the stack. Therefore, your last chance to affect whether something might trigger is the end of the step preceding S.

In the case of the upkeep, you would need to act at the end of the previous turn; you don't get priority during the untap, nor, as explained above, before abilities trigger in the upkeep.
