Reaper of the Wilds activated abilities

Asked by Hanzeru 8 years ago

Can you activate Reaper of the Wilds's activated abilities during the turn it was summoned? Or during your opponent's turn following your turn when you summoned it?

Scenario:1) Player A summoned Reaper of the Wilds. Player A has 3 remaining mana.2) During player B's turn, he casted a kill spell targeting the Reaper.3) Can Player A activate the hexproof ability?

The only time that summoning sickness stops you from activating a creature's activated abilities is if it requires the creature to Tap. Since none of Reaper of the Wilds activated abilities require tapping, you can activate them the turn you cast Reaper.

JWiley129 This is a bit nitpicky but your post isn't technically correct. Summoning sickness means that you cannot: Declare this creature as an attacker, activate an ability that has the tap symbol in its cost, or activate an ability that has the untap symbol in its cost. This rules actually matters for cards like Heritage Druid which is a popular legacy deck so that question wouldn't be surprising to get at a legacy tournament.

lordoftheshadows - However, Heritage Druid isn't required to tap for its ability. So I'm still correct. But yeah, you were super nitpicky there.

JWiley129 but Heritage Druid can be tapped for mana with its ability the same turn it entered the battlefield because its ability doesn't have the tap symbol.

I get that, but you don't have to tap Heritage Druid to its ability at all. But again, it's super nitpicky and doesn't impact the answer to the question at all.

To join the nitpicker's circle: Whether you actually have to tap a creature, may tap the creature or may not tap the creature doesn't matter. Summoning Sickness prevents you from paying the cost - it doesn't prevent the creature from being tapped as the result of a spell or ability, or to pay the cost of a spell or ability.
