question about multiple blockers and instants

Asked by doodkyle 9 years ago

example: i have an 8/8 blocker with trample. my foe decides to block with a 2/2, a 2/2 and a 4/4. assuming i assign the damage as follows: 2/2/4 how is the situation affected if the defending player gives either 2/2 creatures Giant Growth

If you've chosen the order in which to assign combat damage, it's actually too late for an opponent to play an instant. Damage order is the first thing that happens in the combat damage step. Rule 510.1 in the Comp rules, if you wanna look it up. Your opponent can't go, "Oh, that's how you're doing damage? Hahaha no Giant Growth ."

Assigning combat damage and damage assignment order are two different things, and done at different times.

Damage assignment order is made immediately after blockers are declared. Let's say your opponent blocks with a Traveling Philosopher , Grizzly Bears , and a Corpsejack Menace . As the attacker, you assign the order of these creatures your attacking 8/8 will deal its damage to eventually in the combat phase. After you assign this order, your opponent may cast his Giant Growth .

Assigning combat damage is done in the combat damage step, and must be followed in the order previously announced.

GreatSword is correct. You choose the damage assignment order directly after declaring blockers. There is a round of priority after that in which your opponent can cast instants. If one to the 2/2s is Giant Growth ed then you will have to assign damage like this: 2/5/1 or 5/2/1. You have to assign lethal damage to the first creature in the damage assignment order to be able to assign any damage to the next creature. In this example you can will be able to kill the 2/2 and the 5/5 but not the 4/4.

Greatsword is actually wrong. erabel was correct the first time.

510.2. Second, all combat damage that's been assigned is dealt simultaneously. This turn-based action doesn't use the stack. No player has the chance to cast spells or activate abilities between the time combat damage is assigned and the time it's dealt. This is a change from previous rules.

@Gidgetimer you are confusing combat damage assignment, which happens in the combat damage step, and the damage assignment order which happens after blockers have been declared before anyone one gets priority. From the comp rules:

509.2. Second, for each attacking creature thats become blocked, the active player announces that creatures damage assignment order, which consists of the creatures blocking it in an order of that players choice. (During the combat damage step, an attacking creature cant assign combat damageto a creature thats blocking it unless each creature ahead of that blocking creature in its order is assigned lethal damage.) This turn-based action doesnt use the stack.
