Mutavault and Athreos

Asked by BlueScope 9 years ago

Assuming I control a Mutavault and an Athreos, God of Passage . I animate Mutavault, and it is dealt lethal damage. Does Athreos' ability (that gives my opponent the choice of paying 3 life, otherwise I return Mutavault to my hand) trigger off of it?

I assume Mutavault is considered a creature until effectively being in a graveyard, where it returns to it's "what the card reads" status, I just can't find anything backing that theory :)

Thanks in advance.

Athreos, God of Passage will trigger for Mutavault and will return it to your hand if target opponent doesn't pay 3 life. The reason is that LTB triggers determine whether they should trigger based on the situation right before the object left the battlefield. Mutavault was a creature, so it's eligible for triggering. Then the ability tracks the object in a zone where it is supposed to be and doesn't care whether it's still a creature (if it did care, it would have specifically said "if it's still a creature, return...").

When Mutavault leaves the field, it is still considered a creature and will trigger Athreos' ability. Athreos then tracks the zone change from the battlefield to the graveyard, and then returns that card to your hand. At this point, he no longer cares whether the card is a creature or not. The only thing that it checks is that it was a creature when it was last on the battlefield.
