Kalamax infinite copy combo

Asked by Mibz117 3 years ago

Im trying to understand the [Kalamax, the Stormsire] and [Reverberate] or some other fork like ability combo.

My friend attacks with kalamax tapping him, he then casts revertebrate and copies itself infinitely.

My understanding is that spells cannot target itself correct. So that would be an illegal move and the game would revert back to the point before revertebrate was cast. This is my understanding but correct me if i am wrong.

But my second question would be if kalamax can only copy the first spell on the stack, as the controller, my friend cannot cast revertebrate first since there is no legal target. Does that mean he would have to wait for, lets say, an opponent or teammate to cast the first spell then he casts revertebrate to go infinite?

My first comment is make sure when you put brackets on your cards so that they show up, make sure that you put double brackets - two on each end.

On the rules side of things:

114.4. A spell or ability on the stack is an illegal target for itself.

So to cast the Reverberate, there first needs to be a legal target on the stack for it to target. It can not target itself even then. Furthermore, because Kalamax, the Stormsire says, "Whenever you cast your first instant spell each turn..." your opponent will have to wait for someone else to cast an instant or sorcery to respond to. If they try to cast an instant or sorcery that they can target with Reverberate, that would copy first, not reverberate. However, if Reverberate is copied, or another spell like it is cast targeting it (such as Twincast), than yes, you can copy it as many times as you want. However, this isn't technically an infinite combo because all these abilities say "may," meaning at some point the player can choose to break the combo. The only way I think of this being abused is if your opponent also has out Ral, Storm Conduit or something like that. Semi-infinite copies doesn't really do much in the end...
