Is Rith, the Awakener illegal in modern?

Asked by McSween7 9 years ago

I am building a modern deck and when I listed Rith, the Awakener, T/O said she was illegal in modern format. So, I checked, because I know in the past that the site has made a few legality errors regarding the cards. I looked on two different websites and both didn't say that Rith was illegal, so now I am confused?

The Banned list for Modern only lists illegal cards from expansions that are otherwise all Modern-legal. Rith, the Awakener was only printed in the Invasion expansion, which isn't legal in Modern. Special box set or promotional printings (for Rith, this would be From the Vault: Dragons and Duel Decks: Phyrexia vs. The Coalition) don't count as "expansions" for determining a card's Modern legality.

Always check the gatherer and the official banned list, found here

As far as I am concerned, he is not legal in modern because he was printed in Invasion, which is not legal in modern, but you can still use him in legacy etc.

If he were to see a reprint, like in Dragons of Tarkir (not that that will happen), he would then become legal.

Rhadamanthus and Derpachus thanks. I've now altered the format so it's legacy because Rith is lethal in this build! one last thing however, is Legacy less frequently played at FNM? Compared to Standard and Modern?

McSween7 I rarely see a legacy tournament at my lgs, which is mainly standard/modern, with EDH and Draft as side events. You could also go to a SCG legacy open if you wanted to.

Legacy is a valid format choice for FNM, but few venues schedule them because of the limited level of interest compared to other formats. Talk with your local organizer to see what they think.

And generally, if you had a deck which was modern legal except for Rith, at a legacy event I would expect you to get smoked. Legacy is a format which will frequently see wins at turn 2 and 3.

What about modern? What turns should a deck finish on?

There's no hard and fast rule for something like that because it depends on the kind of deck you're playing. Control will pull the match longer, Aggro will go quicker, Combo wants to be very quick.

As I understand it Wizards tends to look closely at any Modern deck that can consistently win on Turn 4 in terms of whether a card might need to be banned.

Devonin Okay, well do you think you could take a quick look at my deck? You don't need to upvote or anything, but I would like your input on how strong it is as a deck in modern format. Thanks for your help also. It's the Jund one (for some reason it won't let me tag it)
